BARACUTA

Blue Baracuta jacket

A design perfected over 80 years ago.
1937 | MANCHESTER, UK | John Miller / Isaac Miller

BARACUTA is a factory brand founded in 1937 by the Miller brothers, who manufactured rainwear in Manchester on commission for companies such as Burberry and Aquascutum.

The G9 jacket pictured, which has been manufactured since the brand's inception, was originally designed to be used as golf wear. Its stylish design, including a stand-up collar called a dog-ear collar and a tartan check lining, has attracted attention as a fashion item, and its popularity has been further enhanced by functional details such as raglan sleeves for ease of movement, ribbed cuffs and hem to prevent wind from entering, finely woven fabric with excellent windproof and water-repellent properties, and an umbrella yoke to prevent stuffiness.

This style is known as a swing top in Japan, but in English it's commonly called a Harrington jacket. This name comes from the popular TV show "PEYTON PLACE," which began airing in 1964, where Rodney Harrington, played by Ryan O'Neal, wore a BARACUTA G9 jacket.

In addition, Elvis Presley wore a G9 in the film "The Voice That Resonates in the Dark," and Steve McQueen wore one in "The Thomas Crown Affair." It was also incorporated into Ivy League and Mod fashion, and was known to be a favorite of Ken Takakura, one of Japan's most renowned actors. It is truly an eternal classic that transcends time and culture.

Furthermore, various variations similar to the G9 have been released, including the G4, which has a clean look with the ribbed hem removed for comfort while driving, and is also known as a driving coat. There are also other variations such as the G10, a trench coat type, and the England team even wore a half-coat version during the World Cup.

While the silhouette and materials have been updated slightly to suit the times, the G9 jacket remains an eternal classic that has remained largely unchanged. In recent years, however, it has maintained a close relationship with culture, such as collaborating with NOAH clothing, a sophisticated streetwear brand created by Brendon Babenzien, who previously served as design director at Supreme, to produce a G9 dedicated to the 80s mixture band Big Audio Dynamyte (BIG).
