1890 | PARIS, FRANCE | Alessandro Berluti
Born in Italy, Alessandro Berluti moved to Paris and built a career as a shoemaker before establishing the Berluti brand. He gained popularity among the upper class through his custom-made shoes.
Designed in 1895, the year the brand was founded, the "Alessandro" is considered a masterpiece of wholecut shoes named after the founder, Alessandro Berluti, and has been revived by successors for generations, making it an iconic shoe for the brand.
Known as a brand that continues to evolve with each generational change, the third generation, Talbinio, brought about various transformations to the brand, including its entry into the ready-to-wear shoe industry and the launch of a women's collection. It was Olga Berluti, the fourth generation head of the family, known for her famous quote "Polish your shoes, and polish yourself," who introduced shoes with beautiful color variations on Venezia leather, which is said to be the brand's identity. The patina dyeing technique, in which artisans hand-dye the leather, has been loved by many artists and designers, including Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Yves Saint Laurent, and Andy Warhol.
In recent years, the brand has been moving towards a more luxurious image, and in 1993 it became part of LVMH, also known for Louis Vuitton. In 2005, it began manufacturing bags, and since 2018, Kris Van Assche, who previously worked as a designer for Dior Homme, has served as the brand director.
