Unwavering elegance.
1945 | PARIS, FRANCE | CELINE VIPIANA
With its simple elegance, the French luxury brand CELINE is loved by many women.
Surprisingly, its origins lie in a bespoke luxury children's shoe shop founded in 1945 by Celine Vipiana and her husband. The leather children's shoes, meticulously handcrafted one by one by Parisian artisans, became popular among the upper class. Due to their high price, requests from the children's mothers increased, and in response, Celine began developing women's shoes in 1959, which proved even more popular. They also started producing women's bags and accessories. Among these, the women's moccasins "INCA," adorned with equestrian hardware, and the "SULKY" bag, featuring a carriage pattern and buckle, became huge hits, and Celine quickly became a popular brand.
In 1967, Celine also launched its ready-to-wear collection. At the time in Paris, French casual wear known as "BCBG" (short for Bon Chic Bon Genre), meaning "a refined lifestyle of the upper class," was in vogue, and Celine, which advocated basic designs and an elegant atmosphere, became an iconic symbol of BCBG. However, as time passed, BCBG eventually faded away, and Celine's strategy of targeting the upper class became its undoing, causing it to lose momentum.
In 1987, Celine, whose very existence was once in doubt, experienced a turning point. It became part of the Financière Agache Group (now the LVMH Group). This decision allowed the company to restructure its management, and Celine regained its former glory. A major contributor to this revival is said to be Michael Kors, who was appointed as designer in 1998. His sporty style, full of functionality and practicality, became popular, and it is said that the brand's sales doubled in the following years. Subsequently, the "LUGGAGE" bag, inspired by vintage bags, became popular among celebrities and is now an iconic Celine bag.
Although it once fell out of favor, Celine has made a remarkable comeback, and the elegance exuded by its products has become even more refined, possessing an unwavering strength. Surely, somewhere deep down, people desire to be refined. That's why modern women may want to own Celine, which combines strength and elegance.
