DESCENTE

Black puffer jacket with a hood and zipper

A Japanese brand that is evolving the world of sports.
1935 | OSAKA, JAPAN | Takeo Ishimoto

In 1935, founder Takao Ishimoto established Tsuruya, the predecessor of DESCENTE, in Osaka. In the 1950s, they developed baseball uniforms and training pants made of canvas with shrink-resistant processing. These baseball uniforms, which combined innovative design and functionality, have remained popular to this day, and in the 1980s, they were involved in the production of uniforms for 11 professional baseball teams in Japan.

In 1954, the company began manufacturing ski wear and changed its name to "DESCENTE," which became the brand name for the product. During the ski boom of the 1970s, their fashionable "demo pants" and air-resistant "downhill suits" became very popular.

The company also focuses on promoting sports, and since 1964 has been importing and partnering with overseas sports brands such as "Munsingwear," "Adidas," "NCAA," "Arena," and "FILA." While playing a part in the sportswear boom, it continues to sponsor golf tournaments, track and field events, and soccer leagues to this day.

In 2008, they developed "Mizusawa Down" for the Japanese Olympic team at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. By sealing the down with heat-sealing instead of stitching and using waterproof tape on the seams, it became a popular down jacket that boasted high water resistance while maintaining a comfortable fit.

Even today, with numerous brands under its umbrella, it continues to incorporate feedback from everyone from top athletes to ordinary users into its products, making it a sports brand that Japan can proudly present to the world.
