A supreme brand that never rests on its past glory.
1872 | MADRID, SPAIN | ENRIQUE LOEWE ROESSBERG
LOEWE is a luxury brand that boasts worldwide popularity, primarily for its supreme leather products.
Its origins date back to the mid-19th century when German leather craftsman Enrique Loewe Rossberg visited Spain, the heartland of leather goods. Impressed by the craftsmanship and high quality of the leather, he opened a workshop in Madrid, Spain, and in 1872, Loewe was established as a brand.
Initially, the company manufactured small leather goods such as cigar cases and coin purses, but its leather jewelry cases and other items gained popularity among the nobility and wealthy, leading it to expand into the production of trunks and other luxury items. In 1892, it opened the "E. Loewe Boutique," a shop and workshop, and around this time began manufacturing women's handbags. Due to the high quality of its products, in 1905 it was granted the title of Royal Warrant Holder by King Alfonso XIII of Spain.
The brand continued to grow, and surprisingly, its Gran Via store in Madrid, which opened in 1939, stocked not only its own products but also those of high-end brands such as Christian Dior, Chloé, and Charles Jourda, resembling a cutting-edge luxury boutique. Loewe launched its ready-to-wear line in 1965, and it is said that several prominent designers, including Karl Lagerfeld, were involved around this time, but the lack of detailed records is another mystery unique to a brand with such a long history.
In 1970, the "ANAGRAM" logo, featuring four "L"s that symbolize Loewe, was designed by Spanish painter Vincent Vera. In 1975, the "AMAZONA" bag, one of the brand's iconic bags, was born. In 1985, Loewe partnered with Louis Vuitton, and in 1996, it became a subsidiary of Louis Vuitton. With the absolute backing of Louis Vuitton, Loewe employed up-and-coming designers and focused on its ready-to-wear division, expanding its appeal to a wider range of customers. Subsequently, distinctive collections such as "NAPA," "HAMMOCK," and "PUZZLE" continued to gain popularity, establishing the solid position that continues to this day.
In 2014, the logo's anagram was redesigned in a more modern style under the direction of Jonathan William Anderson, who had been the designer since the previous year. This demonstrates that Loewe, a purveyor to the Spanish royal family and once a client of Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco, is a brand that continues to grow by adapting to the times without resting on its past laurels.
