STONE ISLAND

An insatiable spirit of research has given rise to innovation, technology, and unique evolution.

Seven jackets. That's all the Italian brand, STONE ISLAND, put together for its first collection.

Even though there were only seven jackets, they truly stood out. They were made from "tarpaulin," a material that has been coated with synthetic resin on both sides to enhance its waterproofness and strength—a tough material that is generally unsuitable for jackets. By subjecting this fabric, which is even used for truck tarpaulins, to several hours of stone washing, the fabric becomes soft and develops a unique texture as if it has been well-worn. The jackets made from this fabric, named "Tela Stella," exuded an unprecedented presence. The seven jackets, which looked as if they had aged over a long period of time on a seaside, were named "Stone Island" to express the tasteful atmosphere they exuded, and this name later became the brand name.

The logo badge called "WINDROSE," which has become an icon of the brand, was also created at this time. The cross-shaped compass is said to represent the brand's love for the sea and its attitude of moving straight ahead across the vast ocean of never-ending textile research.

Stone Island was founded in 1982 by graphic designer Massimo Osti, and the following year, 1983, it became part of the GFT Group (Gruppo Finanziario Tessile), a major textile manufacturer in Turin, Italy, and began developing a full collection. Massimo focused on the functionality of military wear, which had evolved as the ultimate practical item, and immersed himself in the study of textiles. He created unprecedented materials through new technologies such as fabric processing, dyeing, and coating, and incorporated them into product manufacturing. It was in this context that the "Ice Jacket" was created in 1989. This jacket, packed with the innovative idea of a surface that changes color depending on the temperature and the technical skills that made it possible, attracted the attention of the world to Stone Island.

In 1993, Stone Island became independent from the GFT Group and was launched under a new company, "SPORTSWEAR COMPANY SpA." However, in 1996, designer Massimo Osti left the brand due to differences in direction with the company, and British designer Paul Harvey took over as his successor. He also focused on textile development, and in 1999, he released the groundbreaking collections "Silver Jacket," made from fabric woven with stainless steel, and "Bronze Jacket," made from copper fabric, marking the beginning of a new stage for the brand.

Stone Island has continued to grow through innovation and technological prowess. After Paul Harvey, who had served as designer for many years, left in 2008, Chairman Carlo Rivetti himself took over the design team and direction. Armed with down jackets that are particularly popular for their extremely high water repellency and cold-weather protection, the brand continues to evolve in its own unique way, absorbing new inspiration through collaborations with big names such as Supreme and Nike.
