A street icon that has taken the world by storm. It all started with a free-spirited sign painted on a surfboard.
1980 | CALIFORNIA, USA | Shawn Stussy

It's more than just a brand. It's a culture, a movement. Stüssy, a pioneer of what's commonly known as a "street brand," has reigned at the top of the scene for over 40 years. Its history began on a sunny beach in California, fueled by the passion of its founder, a surfboard shaper.

The story begins in 1980 in Laguna Beach, California. Surfboard shaper Shawn Stussy scribbled his family name, "STÜSSY," onto a surfboard he had carved himself, marking its origin. The free-spirited, graffiti-like logo, said to have been inspired by the signature of Shawn's uncle, abstract painter Jan Frédéric Stussy, would later become a symbol of Stussy, which would take the world by storm.

Initially, Sean simply created T-shirts for his friends. He was handing out T-shirts with his logo, made for promotional purposes, as promotional items for surfboards. However, the cool designs quickly became popular among surfers, and unexpectedly, this led him down the path to becoming an apparel brand.

In the late 1980s, Stüssy transcended the surf genre and resonated with the new wave of street culture emerging in the underground, including skateboarding, hip-hop, and club culture. With shops in New York and Los Angeles, its popularity accelerated even further. Their iconic designs, such as messages written in the distinctive "Sean font" and the "8-ball" and the "S logo" (a parody of Chanel's logo), were not merely "cool" clothing, but a medium that expressed the times itself.

At the heart of this movement was the "International Stüssy Tribe (IST)," a group of creators from around the world. Hiroshi Fujiwara, who would later lead the Ura-Harajuku culture and continue to captivate the world, was one of them. In an era before the internet, these highly perceptive ISTs wore Stüssy items and embodied their appeal, allowing the brand's message to spread to the world with genuine energy. This organic connection was the core of the brand.

In 1996, founder Shawn Stussy stepped back from the forefront of the brand to prioritize his family. However, the seeds he sowed took deep root as an unwavering brand philosophy, and its creativity never stopped.

The legend began with a casual, hand-drawn signature on a surfboard. Stüssy has always been a step ahead of the times, absorbing various cultures and establishing its own unique style. It's no exaggeration to say that it created the very concept of a street brand. Its free spirit remains undiminished, continuing to inspire the fashion scene around the world.
