Lightness is justice. Authentic outerwear approved by the polar regions,
1981 | NEW HAMPSHIRE, USA | John Bouchard and Marie Meunier
"LIGHT IS RIGHT"—It must be light and tough. Weight can sometimes be the enemy in harsh environments where life and death are at stake. That's why clothing, as a tool, must be as light as possible and possess absolutely reliable robustness. These are the people who continue to create products, infusing them with this simple yet powerful philosophy as an unwavering belief. That is WILD THINGS.
The brand's history has been written with blood and sweat on the peaks of the rugged wilderness. The story begins in 1981 in North Conway, New Hampshire, USA. The founders were mountaineer John Bouchard and Marie Meunière, who would later become his wife. Marie's background is particularly noteworthy. She was born into a family of mountain guides in Chamonix, Switzerland, and from a young age, she understood that there could be no compromise when it came to mountaineering equipment on which she entrusted her life. Therefore, it was inevitable that the products created by Marie and John, both mountaineers, boasted a level of "authenticity" that set them apart from others from the very beginning. All the knowledge and experience they gained in the field were poured into embodying the philosophy of "light and tough."
Eventually, a masterpiece embodying their philosophy gained worldwide recognition: the brand's iconic "DENALI JACKET," born in 1983. The following year, in 1984, founder Marie herself, wearing this jacket, achieved a historic feat by becoming the first woman to successfully climb Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Andes Mountains. Her achievement not only made the name of Wild Things famous among climbers but also proved the overwhelming functionality of the clothing she designed in the most outstanding way possible.
By the way, an essential element when discussing Wild Things is the existence of "PrimaLoft," a synthetic down. The Denali jacket was a pioneer in outerwear, being one of the first to adopt this groundbreaking synthetic down, which was still rare at the time. PrimaLoft is an ultra-fine microfiber material developed at the request of the U.S. military. Its performance is said to be comparable to, or even surpass, that of natural down feathers. While natural down jackets are vulnerable to water and lose their insulating power significantly once wet, PrimaLoft has high water repellency and maintains its insulating power even when wet. Outerwear that uses PrimaLoft can be said to symbolize the brand's innovation and identity.
Wild Things' reliability eventually extended beyond the mountaineering field, leading to national-level projects. In 1985, Wild Things began supplying gear and apparel to the U.S. military. They were eventually certified as a supplier of the ECWCS (Extended Cold Weather Clothing System), a layering system that supports activities in harsh environments. The so-called "HAPPY SUIT" was developed as the LEVEL 7 outer layer of the ECWCS, boasting the strongest cold-weather protection. The "HAPPY JACKET," which enjoys immense popularity in the fashion scene, is an evolution of this masterpiece of military wear, adapted for urban use. The origin of the name "HAPPY" is said to be that the tags on the early models featured a smiley face, which was quite out of place on military-issued equipment. The story of how it brought a moment of peace and happiness to soldiers on demanding missions adds further depth to the jacket's overwhelming heat retention and functional beauty.
In 2010, they launched WILD THINGS TACTICAL, a military line that develops products for U.S. Special Forces. This is proof that Wild Things continues to create authentic gear.
Born to protect lives in the polar regions, Wild Things outerwear, with its overwhelming functionality and minimalist design, has transcended the wilderness and taken the streets by storm. It possesses an undeniable persuasive power, forged only in the harsh natural environment or the battlefield—the "real thing." In today's rapidly changing fashion world, there is a steadfast philosophy and a genuine story forged in life-threatening situations that truly underpins it. "LIGHT IS RIGHT"—this philosophy will never fade, and will continue to provide those who wear it with a sense of undeniable satisfaction and pride.
